On August 21 st , we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day in honor of our elderly population. This date was set by proclamation in 1988 by then President Ronald Reagan. The purpose is to commemorate achievements of older Americans in regard to family, community, and country. Changing demographics due to improved healthcare have enabled our older citizens to contribute more years of productivity than ever before. This has allowed many to seek second careers and serve as role models for the younger generations. For all that they have done, we owe our seniors our thanks and gratitude. During the month of August and especially on August 21 ST , make an effort to spend some time with a senior, show your appreciation, you may even volunteer in some program of senior support. For caregivers, this is the perfect opportunity to surprise them with a healthcare item to help them maintain a degree of independence; a pillow, a cushion, a cane, a walker, etc.
